Primary Objective of the Position:
The Health & Safety Officer is responsible for supporting the organization’s compliance with occupational health and safety legislation by coordinating health and safety programs, managing injury reporting, and monitoring workers’ compensation and disability cases. This role plays a key part in promoting a safety-conscious workplace by ensuring timely documentation, facilitating communication between departments, and supporting the Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC).
Job Duties:
- Monitor and track all workplace incidents, injuries, and near-misses; ensure accurate documentation and timely reporting.
- Coordinate and manage all Workers’ Compensation Board (e.g., WSIB) claims and documentation.
- Track and follow up on Short-Term Disability (STD) and Long-Term Disability (LTD) cases in collaboration with HR and third-party providers.
- Liaise with insurance providers, medical professionals, and internal stakeholders to support claim resolution and return-to-work planning.
- Support the implementation and administration of health and safety policies and procedures.
- Maintain up-to-date documentation including training records, injury logs, first aid reports, and safety communication materials.
- Assist with scheduling and documenting safety-related training (e.g., WHMIS, first aid, ergonomics) and orientations.
- Coordinate health and safety initiatives and awareness campaigns across work sites.
- Act as a key contact for the Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC); coordinate meetings, prepare agendas, and maintain records.
- Ensure all safety-related documentation is audit-ready and complies with applicable legislation and company requirements.
- Stay informed on updates to federal and provincial health and safety legislation and support compliance initiatives.
- Support the Human Resource team with ad hoc duties as required.
Qualifications:
- Post-secondary education in Occupational Health & Safety, Human Resources, or a related field.
- Certification in health and safety (e.g., JHSC Certification, WHMIS, First Aid) is an asset.
- Minimum 3+ years of experience in health and safety coordination, workers' compensation, or disability management.
- Familiarity with WSIB (or equivalent provincial Workers' Compensation systems), STD/LTD programs, and return-to-work processes.
- Strong administrative and organizational skills, with attention to detail in tracking and documentation.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; able to work effectively with employees, managers, and external providers.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook); experience with incident tracking systems is an asset.
