The role
As an Industrial Painter, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. You'll be crucial to maintaining our Naval vessels, from warships to nuclear submarines. Working within multi-trade teams, you'll contribute to some of the most exciting engineering projects in the country, with confirmed work scheduled well into the future.
Day-to-day, you’ll work alongside a team of dedicated industrial staff to ensure surface preparation standards are met and coating application techniques are properly utilised in vessel maintenance. Your tasks will include descaling, brush and roller painting, painting accommodation areas, fine brush painting, large spray evaluations, and more.
In this role, you will also:
- Prepare bare surfaces and existing coatings using a systematic approach.
- Show a strong understanding of quality standards for surface preparation.
- Understand the requirements in paint manufacturer’s technical and safety data sheets.
- Apply coatings in a marine environment using brushes, rollers, conventional spray, and airless spray.
The position is full-time, 35 hours per week and is based on site at Devonport Royal Dockyard. There is an opportunity for Optimised Working Patterns (OWP) within this role, OWP is currently in its pilot stage until 31st March 2024 and not guaranteed; it involves a 4-week shift cycle consisting of either day/back shift or day/night shift.

Essential experience of the Industrial Painter
- Experience of various painting techniques such as brush, roller, and conventional spraying.
- Sound understanding of Health and Safety / COSHH.
Qualifications for the Industrial Painter
- NVQ level 2 and 3 Industrial / Marine / Painting / Decorating or equivalent experience
