The role
As a Clerk of Works, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. This role supports our Land sector operations relating to Major Infrastructure Projects and our continued support of the Royal School of Mechanical Engineering (RSME) and provision of training services, infrastructure and soft services.
Day-to-day, you will be responsible for ensuring that our construction projects are carried out to the agreed quality standards, specification and schedule, and health and safety procedures are being followed.
- Inspecting construction work and comparing it with drawings and specifications and reporting any anomalies to the responsible Senior Project Manager
- Measuring and quality checking building materials, installation methodology and fixings
- Identifying defects and suggesting ways to correct them
- Monitoring progress and reporting to the Senior Project Manager and/or the Head of Programmes as appropriate
- Keeping detailed records of work, maintaining files and information packs to aid future claims and rectification plans
- Referring to plans and taking photographs of work, along with measurements and samples
- Liaising with contractors, Project Managers and surveyors across a range of projects at the RSME
- Checking that building regulations, health and safety, legal and ecological requirements are met ensuring records are kept recording audit findings
This position involves manual work. This could include lifting, bending, using tools or standing for extended periods of time and involves working in confined spaces. Candidates must be able to work comfortably and perform tasks in restricted spaces. Also, this position involves travel/working across a range of internal and customer sites, as a requirement of the role.
This role is full time, thirty-seven hours per week and is based at RSME Brompton and requires regular travel across a range of internal and customer sites on a weekly / monthly basis alongside home working arrangements.
Agile working may be available to employees in some instances, applying the principles of fairness and consistency whilst ensuring that the overriding business needs can be appropriately met. Essential experience of the Clerk of Works
- Extensive technical expertise and experience in a comparable role gained in a similar environment, consultancy, or end user client
- Good understanding of the industry best practices, processes, and standards
- Good knowledge of building regulations and the ability to read construction drawings
- Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
- Experience of working with Listed Buildings and Historic England is desirable
- Knowledge of Joint Services Publication (JSP) Documents is desirable
Qualifications for the Clerk of Works
- Clerk of Works ICWIC accredited / accreditation is highly desirable
- Other designations such CIOB, CABE, RICS, IFE will also be considered
