Role Summary
The ‘Principal, California Business & Partnership Development’ is a subject matter expert and leader of Alaska Air Group’s long-term strategy for commercial partnerships and business development initiatives in the state of California. As an individual contributor this role exercises considerable latitude and initiative to strategize, establish, and grow external partnerships that drive profit growth and customer benefits; working with an array of both internal and external stakeholders to lead a cohesive business development strategy that forms a key part of both the central Alaska Air Group business development and California growth strategies.
Key Duties

Working between the California Commercial Planning and central Business Development teams, lead a business development and partnership plan for the state of California that drives customer and brand benefits, as well as increased profitability.

Build a strategy, partnerships and products that enable increased market penetration across the state and specifically within focus Hub markets.

Be a thought leader in business and customer trends within California, identifying products and developing partnerships that build on the zeitgeist to drive Alaska’s customer and loyalty value.

Partner with internal stakeholders and functional teams including Loyalty, Alliances and Guest Products teams to identify, engage, & cultivate relationships with potential partners in the state of California that deliver enhanced relevance, guest satisfaction and engagement.

Influence AAG’s commercial business model through a strategy that delivers competitive advantages.

Source, approach and qualify potential partners. Prioritize, select, and develop opportunities, conduct rigorous diligence and financial modeling, develop business cases, make recommendations, and execute selected opportunities – including ensuring effective stakeholder engagement and communications.

Collaborate with Supply Chain, Legal, Finance, and other Commercial stakeholders to develop and negotiate term sheets and definitive agreements, structure and execute transactions.

Lead and coordinate projects and programs with cross-functional stakeholders.

Partner with Commercial Products, Marketing, and eCommerce regarding implementation, merchandising & marketing of California partnerships.

Proactively communicate approach, details, and updates across all levels of the organization and across multiple teams in a clear and concise manner.

Develop business performance metrics for products and partnerships; manage partner relationships to leverage insights and achieve KPIs; monitor business impact (e.g., revenue, penetration, etc.) to AAG.

Deliver regular trends and insights to company executives on technology innovation, competitive activity, and the California market, including through strategic relationships to identify trends.

Develop and manage relationships with existing and new external organizations and partners to enable the commercialization of innovation.

Design and implement innovative commercial opportunities from concept through pilot programs and into mainstream activity through well-articulated and metric-driven strategies, and effective stakeholder relationships.
Job-Specific Experience, Education & Skills
Required
-
7+ years of experience in experience in business development, partner/loyalty management, strategic planning, or related area.

Bachelor’s degree with a focus in Business Administration, Finance, Economics or related area, or an additional two years of training/experience in lieu of this degree.

Experience overseeing strategic partnerships and business development, including identifying partners, structuring deal terms, contract negotiation, technical integration, and relationship management. Preferably in the California market.

Demonstrated relationship management skills, ability to build and grow connections with people of all types and backgrounds, and ability to build effective relationships to influence and develop buy-in in corporate settings and with key stakeholders.

Highly organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to keep multiple projects and client engagements active at once.

Clear, compelling, and effective communication in written and oral form including through business cases and executive presentations.

Superior problem-solving and analytical skills using data-driven, transparent, simple, and logical approaches.

Experience developing and maintaining effective working relationships with stakeholders with the ability to win strong support for ideas.

Ability to travel 10% of the time.

High school diploma or equivalent.

Minimum age of 18.

Must be authorized to work in the U.S.

Role is based in Burlingame, CA. Successful applicant must be based in the Bay Area and commit to working from the AAG office a minimum of 3-4 days a week.
Preferred
- MBA or advanced degree in finance or economics is preferable.

Salary Range
$149,700 - $224,600 / year
Salary Details
Pay will be based on multiple factors, including and not limited to location, relevant experience/level and skillset while balancing internal equity relative to other Alaska/Horizon employees. Alaska/Horizon is committed to fair, unbiased compensation along with competitive benefits in all locations in which we operate.
Note: We don’t typically hire at the top of the range.
