The role
As Head of Mechanical Systems Group, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. Many of the mechanical systems that you will be the technical authority for, involve significant nuclear safety considerations, as well as being key to the successful delivery of customer platform maintenance programmes, thus making this a critical role in our business.
Day-to-day, you’ll lead the Mechanical Systems Group which comprises of the Mechanical Services Group, the Mechanical Building Services Group and the Maintenance Policy Group. These groups oversee the specification, design, survey, inspection and maintenance prescription for all of the mechanical cross site services, mechanical building services including nuclear implicated Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC), for which Babcock is the Design Authority within Devonport.
Responsibilities of the Head of Mechanical Systems Group include:
- Growing and developing a team of professional Engineers, currently 35 – 40 in number
- Providing technical analysis, advice and engineering outputs to the Facility Design Authorities for both Nuclear and Non-Nuclear facilities within HMNB Devonport
- Prioritising the allocation of Engineers to support a wide range of critical projects and key customers
- Reviewing and approving technical documentation relating to critical assets in support of Nuclear Submarine programmes
- Reviewing and approving often complex technical specifications, drawings and design documentation
This role is full time, 35 hours per week and provides hybrid working arrangements with a minimum of 2 days in the office/onsite.
Essential experience of the Head of Mechanical Systems Group:
- Strong mechanical engineering technical background
- Significant experience of managing teams of professional engineers in a related industry, preferably in areas where safety is paramount and processes are governed by legislation and regulators
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, due to the levels of stakeholder management
- Extensive experience of the design lifecycle
- A logical approach to problem solving.
Qualifications for the Head of Mechanical Systems Group:
- Degree (or equivalent experience) in an appropriate discipline
- Preferably Chartered Engineer, or have significant demonstrable equivalence and be working towards registration as a Chartered Engineer, with a relevant professional engineering institution.
Security Clearance
The successful candidate must be a sole UK national who is able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) and Naval Nuclear Propulsion Information (NNPPI) security clearance for this role.
