The Role
As an Operational Engineering Manager - Space, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. This is a new role where you will be creating network baseline configuration management and Network Management System (NMS) support tools.
Day-to-day, you’ll be providing technical leadership, independent technical oversight and subject matter expertise to the Skynet engineering teams to develop new, and support in-service, satellite communications systems and services for UK Defence customers.
- Implementing new design and delivery for the new service for the customer.
- Oversee and maintain the baseline configuration of the satellite communications ground system network, ensuring it meets operational and security requirements.
- Customer interface through communicating effectively with customers to understand their requirements and provide technical guidance and support.
- Technical leadership which will include the lead and mentor a team of Engineers, providing guidance, training, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement and technical excellence. Collaborate with other departments and stakeholders to ensure the successful execution of projects and initiatives.
- Third-line support will serve as the technical escalation point for complex issues, providing third-line support to troubleshoot and resolve network problems. Collaborate with vendors, stakeholders, and internal teams to address and resolve advanced technical challenges.
This role is full time, 37 hours per week and provides hybrid working arrangements with regular travel to our other sites in Bristol and Bordon, Hampshire.
Essential Experience of the Operational Engineering Manager - Space:
- Substantial experience in satellite communications or a related field, with demonstrable expertise in an engineering managerial role.
- Proven experience with military satellite communications ground systems, network design, and service delivery.
- Strong understanding of IP networking, routing, switching, and protocols relevant to satellite communications.
- Excellent problem solving skills with a track record of managing complex technical challenges.
- Strong leadership skills and experience in managing and developing engineering teams.
- Excellent communication and customer-facing skills, with the ability to effectively manage customer relationships and expectations.
Qualifications for the Operational Engineering Manager - Space
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Telecommunications, or a related field (Master's degree preferred).

The successful candidate must be a sole UK national who is able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) / Developed Vetting (DV) security clearance for this role.
