This role is an exciting opportunity to join the Imager Electronics team working on space missions from LEO to GEO and beyond. Engineers at SSTL have involvement on a mission from concept, through to AIT, launch, commissioning and operational life; a true cradle to grave experience and will give you the chance to see your work in Space in a rapid timescale! As part of the Optical Payloads group this role will promote close working with other members of the Optical Department as well as supporting the core team of a satellite mission interacting with other technical leads across multiple disciplines to generate the technical solutions for innovative projects.
Reports To Optical Payloads Group Leader
Key Purpose Of Job
To manage the Imager Electronics Team. The role involves supporting the delivery of Imager hardware to SSTL’s fleet of Imaging Spacecraft.
Responsible For
The output of the team: meeting financial/resources, quality and technical requirements.
Key Tasks
- Ensure effective plans are in place to deliver all work and work packages, to the appropriate quality level, within project budget and schedule constraints.
- Interface with Project Engineering to ensure the needs of the project are met.
- Ensure team level policies and procedures are in place to allow consistent and coherent team output, in line with SSTL approach to Engineering as defined in the White Paper.
- Ensure risks are identified, managed and communicated to Projects and Engineering.
- Understand the skills matrix within the Team and ensure the team has the skills required to deliver current & future projects in line with the business plan and there is a viable plan in place to retain & develop team members with a particular view to succession planning and single point failures.
- Work with the PM’s, Group leaders and other TL’s to identify and resolve any resource conflicts or problems before they impact upon project progress.
- Develop, train and mentor team members, ensuring the team remain current in their areas of technical excellence.
- Ensure that all the Work Package Managers in the team meet their requirements of their Work Package Descriptions, and that their plans are valid, achievable and coherent with SSTL working practices.
- Ensure the forward resource load is maintained and staffing levels are in line with the needs of SSTL.
- Define and implement subsystem development strategy to support Company Product Development strategy.
- Support bidding activities as required.
- Work with BDS to develop and market Imager product lines.
PERSON SPECIFICATION (essential requirements)
Experience
- Several years of mixed signal, analogue and digital hardware engineering experience.
- Line management experience.
- Good track record with planning and meeting budgets/schedule.
- Proven track record of strong leadership skills
- Experience in Imaging field highly desirable
