The role
As a Principal Commissioning Engineer - Mechanical, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. You’ll lead a high dynamic team of Senior/Commissioning Engineers, providing support and guidance as the Subject Matter Expert.
You will manage the planning and execution of commissioning activities on a variety of projects.
Day-to-day, you’ll be leading a team of both Senior/Commissioning Engineers in the commissioning and setting to work of high integrity mechanical submarine systems.
- Managing multiple complex commissioning packages across multiple projects with the ability to work to a consistently high standard.
- Ensuring all test documentation is prepared and correctly authorised to meet project programmes.
- Promoting a robust safety culture within the team, ensuring production and use of safety documentation and Safe Systems of Work requirements are understood and executed.
- Managing and developing their section in order to undertake the testing, setting to work and commissioning of nuclear submarine systems and equipment to time, cost and quality.
- Maintaining a close liaison with Ship Staff, Project, Production and Senior Commissioning Engineers so that any possible conflicts in testing and safety implications to the submarine can be readily identified and resolved.
This role is full time, 35 hours per week and is based on site at Devonport Royal Dockyard.
This position is within the Engineering Services business unit which has a salary range of £51,941 to £63,443
The Commissioning Group operates an Employee Development Matrix (EDM) which allows for pay progression within Band. The EDM is a performance related competency tool assessing technical and behavioural competence which supports professional development and career progression. The target potential earnings provided the set criteria are met after 3 years in role is £57,692.
The Commissioning Group has the requirement to utilise shift working where the workload demands which attracts 18% Shift Disturbance Allowance (SDA) for a Dayshift/Backshift pattern.
Babcock at Devonport is also trialling Optimised Working Patterns (OWP) which is aiming to harmonise working arrangements for additional support beyond the standard 5 day working week. This is a voluntary arrangement which attracts a commitment allowance and additional shift rates where the demand exists from the business to utilise OWP. Essential experience of the Principal Commissioning Engineer - Mechanical
- Substantial knowledge and experience of commissioning, operations and maintaining mechanical systems is essential.
- Sound and demonstrable knowledge of safe release of systems, Control of Work process and Safe Systems of Work.
- Sound understanding of Nuclear Safety Cases and the relevance to commissioning activities.
- Experience of leading, developing and managing a team of experienced Commissioning Engineers.
- Strong planning, organisation, and communication skills.
Qualifications for the Principal Commissioning Engineer - Mechanical
- Level 4 Qualification in Mechanical Engineering Discipline, or Level 3 Qualification with significant experience in Commissioning Operations
