An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Mechanical Design Engineer to join Rolls-Royce Submarines in Thurso. Thurso is situated in the historical county of Caithness and is the northernmost town in the UK where we have successfully operated and managed the Vulcan Naval Reactor Test Establishment for the last 50 years on behalf of the Ministry of Defence.
This position is being advertised due to increased workload coming online early 2025.

Your needs are as unique as you are. Hybrid working is a way in which our people can balance their time between the office, home, or another remote location. It’s a locally managed and flexed informal discretionary arrangement. As a minimum we’re all expected to attend the workplace for collaboration and other specific reasons, on average three days per week.
What you will be doing:
You will be expected to make technical judgement on the options available and present these to site stakeholders prior to detailed design development.
- You will also be expected to provide technical assistance and advice on request to various on-site projects.
- Production of technical documentation for the installation of mechanical components and equipment to support Rolls-Royce operations on the Vulcan site.
- Development of mechanical design solutions from requirements capture, through concept to detailed design.
- Specify, produce, review, and check technical documents.
- Prepare/originate information using theoretical principals.
- Represent department at formal internal and external meetings/design reviews.

- Experienced Mechanical Design Engineer preferably with exposure to process plant, mechanical components, machining, tooling, handling and lifting , special purpose machinery or assembly processes.
- CAD Design Software experience.
- External Skills/Experience can be from industries such as Civil Nuclear, Marine, Petro-Chemical, Oil & Gas, Special Purpose Machinery.
- Engineering Qualification or relevant experience (Chartered/Degree/HND/HNC/Apprentice Trained).

To work for the Rolls-Royce Submarines business an individual has to hold a Security Check clearance. Rolls-Royce will support the application for Security Clearance if you do not currently already have this in place.
