We are looking for a Mechanical Drafting Designer to support the Engine Control Systems business who is a team player with a high level of initiative and the ability to work in an environment of rapidly changing priorities designing complex aerospace products.
As a Mechanical Drafting Designer in our Product Design Definition group, you will work directly with engineering staff to produce 3-D models and 2-D drawings of the product to meet both engineering and customer requirements. The individual in this role will be responsible for preparing a variety of engineering models and drawings, revising drawings and maintaining assembly parts lists. The selected candidate must be competent in aspects of mechanical engineering drawings depicting details, assemblies and outlines.
Experience with industry specifications and in-depth knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) is used to ensure all drawings are complete (accurate, fully dimensioned and in alignment with build-up studies). You will also work closely with our detailing team to ensure drawing accuracy and documentation / organization, the proper usage of GD&T and standard features, manufacturing methodology, and standard library information.
What You Will Do
- Work with engineering for initial 2D concept of product
- Create 3-D product models, outlines, and layouts
- Create solid model piece parts and housings in NX, support the move towards Model-Based Definition, direct to manufacture
- Apply tolerance stack-up analysis results to ensure correct fit and alignment, and performance of complex assemblies
- Create assemblies in NX and manage the Bill of Materials
- Create dimensioned detail component drawings for high complexity piece parts
- Lead detailing drafters in the completion of component drawings for a design project.
- Check drawings for accuracy, correct GD&T, and compliance to company / industry standards
- Support Interface with the Structures group to ensure that they have the necessary physical product definition to perform stress, thermal and dynamic analyses as required and as directed by engineering
- Ensure proper filing, control, and export classification of created design data
Product Design and Definition (PDD) staff are expected to interface directly with Collins’ engineering teams in the design and development of product. You may be required to coordinate and interface with personnel in other Collins divisions throughout the world. Accordingly, good interpersonal communication skills and willingness to operate within a diverse and global workforce are mandatory.
You must be able to work effectively in a team environment, comprehend and implement oral and written inputs and coordinate with project planners on each program you support.
Strict adherence to the design process is mandatory for successful realization of Collins product for our demanding customers. Attention to detail is critical to ensure a safe and reliable product is placed into service.
Qualifications You Must Have
- Typically requires a University Degree and minimum 2 years of prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field or in absence of a degree, 6 years of relevant experience
- The ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government issued security clearance is required
- U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance
Qualifications We Prefer
- Relevant design and drafting experience designing complex assemblies in a 3-D mechanical environment.
- Experience with mechanical and electrical principles and experience reading and interpreting models, assembly, and piece part drawings.
- Experience with GD&T, ANSI Y14.5M dimensioning practices and drafting and product lifecycle management (PLM) tools
- Experience with Siemens NX and Teamcenter in the design of electronic packaging
- Manufacturing and leadership experience
- Experience with Model Based Definition (MBD) and Additive Manufacturing

The salary range for this role is 64,000 USD - 128,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
