Safety Authority – Avionics
Crawley or Reading – Hybrid basis
As the Safety Authority for Avionics (Flight Avionics (FLX) and Thales Training & Simulation (TTS) business lines), you will have accountability for assuring all Safety and Environmental related aspects of our product developments, delivery programme and service offerings.
The FLX & TTS businesses serve a wide variety of domestic and international customers in the aerospace sector, covering both the Civil and Military domains. Your role will include:
- Supporting the design and delivery of our next generation Tactical Mission Management System
- Supporting the design and delivery of our next generation SATCOM Terminal (Flytlink) for use on the Iridium network
- The development of our next generation Secure Intercom and Information System for military fixed and rotary wing platforms
- Supporting delivery of the several studies we are undertaking to shape the future of aircraft communication systems
- Overseeing the development and delivery of high fidelity training simulators, and training services

Key Responsibilities
- Ensuring that safety and environmental management activities are in accordance with policy, instructions, process and guidance;
- Approving any tailoring of Thales UK Safety and Safety environmental policy, instructions, process and guidance
- Maintaining the Safety Management Strategy (SMS) & Environmental Management Strategy (EMS)
- Maintaining a detailed knowledge of the company’s legal responsibilities and liabilities with respect to safety and environmental
- Arbitrating conflicts around Safety / Environmental PSS implementation.
- Review and approval of all Safety and Environmental; Management Plans, Cases, Assessments and Reports, Programmes, Processes, and Artefacts including Declaration of Design Safety
- Ensuring all projects follow an appropriate safety and environmental engineering process
- Ensuring competent individuals are appointed to safety and environmental related roles, with the ability to appoint Safety Assurance Managers, Product HSE Managers, and delegate to lower level Safety Authorities
- Ensuring all products have a valid safety and environmental assessment/case and that the residual risks are known, ALARP and tolerable or broadly acceptable;
- Ensuring that the safety assessment/safety case for each solution is adequately documented and does not place undue risk or liability onto Thales UK (including accepting Product Safety Assessments/Cases on behalf of Thales UK)
- Ensuring that safety and / or Environmental incidents are investigated, reported upon and closed
- Ensuring the Business Lines are represented at the UK PSC and UK Product HSE Committee
Desired knowledge, qualifications and experience
- Minimum of a Bachelor Degree (BEng, BSc) in a Numerate, Scientific or Engineering subject or Higher Education/equivalent training and experience
- Experience of working as a Safety Engineer, Safety Assurance Manager or equivalent as part of a multi-disciplinary engineering teams, with an understanding of System Engineering and System Engineering Processes and Practices, including knowledge of the application and tailoring of Product Development/Engineering Lifecycles
- Experience of working directly with OEMs, UK MoD, UK and overseas suppliers in a responsible safety-related role
- Experience of complex system safety case development

Security Clearance statement
This role will require SC Clearance. It would be advantageous if currently held, however, if not currently held, it is a requirement that the successful applicant will undergo, achieve, and maintain SC Clearance. Please visit the UKSV website for further guidance.
