Responsibilities
As a Graduate Intern of Flight Safety Data Science, you will play a key role in helping the Flight Safety Data and Decision Science team quantify and analyze safety-of-flight risks. You will support the development of data products including machine learning models, data pipelines, and research analysis that strengthen Delta’s proactive approach to safety. Your work will involve exploring a wide range of operational and safety data sources such as flight data, pilot reports, fatigue reports, damage or injury data, and additional operational safety datasets that inform risk-reduction initiatives. Your work will also require you to become familiar with the experience of various frontline work groups, especially pilots. You will collaborate closely with partners across Flight Safety, Corporate Safety and Flight Operations contributing to Delta's Safety Management System (SMS), which is a cornerstone of our accident and incident prevention strategy. Your responsibilities extend across all Flight Safety programs, where you will help analyze trends, support investigations, and communicate insights that foster a strong safety culture. These programs include:
- Flight Operational Quality Assurance (FOQA)
- Aviation Safety Action Program (ASAP)
- Air Safety Investigations (ASI)
- Pilot Fatigue Risk Management
- Safety Promotion
You may also support internal and external meetings, represent Flight Safety and contribute meaningful insights to advance Delta’s commitment to world-class aviation safety.
What You Need To Succeed (Minimum Qualifications)
- Qualified candidate must be enrolled as a current/active student in an accredited graduate program at a college and/or university
- Candidate must be willing to commit to the duration of the internship which may last up to 12 months or longer
- Must be able to work onsite in our Atlanta, GA office for the duration of the internship
- Knowledge working with relational databases and query authoring (SQL)
- Knowledge working with Python, R, and other machine learning platform
- Consistently prioritizes safety and security of self, others, and personal data
- Embraces diverse people, thinking, and styles
- Possesses a high school diploma, GED, or high school equivalency
- Is at least 18 years of age and has authorization to work in the United States
What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
- Preferred degrees in Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Operations Research, Computer Science, Aviation or Aerospace, or other related field
- Project management, organizational, and prioritizations skills
- Strong written, oral communication, and interpersonal skills
- Strong proficiency with machine learning algorithms, techniques, and common data science libraries
- Experience working with unstructured, big data
- Highly motivated with the desire to learn and have a passion for safety
