We have an exciting new opportunity for a Platform Engineering Chapter Lead to lead and evolve the airline's software deployment platform, primarily in the digital space, while managing teams of Platform and DevOps engineers.
The role involves developing and evangelising platform adoption, collaborating with senior stakeholders, and driving innovation in our developer ecosystem to support the airline's digital transformation initiatives.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Lead teams of Platform and DevOps engineers and related specialists to deliver high-quality platforms, environments, and software delivery pipelines. Foster a culture of innovation, continuous learning, and best practices. Manage team performance and ensure high-quality deliverables
- Develop and implement the strategic roadmap for the Internal Developer Platform and tooling. Ensure platform scalability, reliability, and efficiency. Lead initiatives to improve developer productivity and satisfaction through enhanced tooling and processes. Accountable for strategic direction covering DevOps, deployment, and cloud platform technology for digital and commercial applications, working closely with Enterprise Architecture
- Champion and encourage governance, standards, and processes for our Developer Platforms, configuration, and deployment to drive high delivery performance whilst adhering to best practices and industry standards
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand and integrate their needs. Manage relationships with senior stakeholders to align platform strategies with business objectives. Communicate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences
- Platform Evangelism, Adoption, and Developer Experience (DevEx) Drive the adoption of the platform and associated tools across the organisation, promoting best practices and cultural change in platform usage and developer workflows.
- Leverage the Platform Strategy and DevOps practices to champion initiatives to enhance the overall DevEx. Create forums to regularly gather feedback from developers to identify pain points and opportunities for improvement to boost productivity and satisfaction.
- Establish metrics to measure and track improvements in DevEx. Collaborate closely with development teams to ensure the platform meets their evolving needs, fostering a culture of continuous improvement in the developer ecosystem.
- Lead the collaborative, dynamic planning process, prioritising workload against the capacity and capability of the team
- Oversee platform performance, security, and compliance with industry standards. Implement and maintain robust monitoring and alerting systems. Ensure all risks, issues, conflicts, and dependencies are captured, tracked, and appropriate actions taken. Continuously drive process and quality improvements
- Develop and implement a cost-effective tooling strategy, balancing developer productivity with resource efficiency. Implement FinOps practices to manage cloud spend and drive accountability
What You’ll Bring To The Team
- Proven experience as a senior technology leader managing multiple teams or departments in large-scale platforms, shared services, or complex distributed systems. Demonstrates ability to set vision and strategy for a platform engineering organisation.
- Experience in designing and delivering cloud-native solutions, preferably on AWS and Kubernetes, with strong knowledge of API integration, event-driven architectures, and microservices.
- Strong background in at least one modern development stack (e.g. Java, .NET, Python), with ability to work across multiple languages and frameworks in a platform context.
- Experience in building or operating internal platforms, developer tooling, or enablement services supporting multiple engineering teams. Bonus points for Backstage.
- Strong understanding of practices including CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code, automated testing, and observability. Our current stack includes Terraform, GitHub Actions and Octopus
- Proficiency in agile ways of working, with ability to guide teams in continuous delivery improvement.
- Excellent analytical skills to assess and communicate trade-offs between delivery speed, cost, risk, and long-term technical debt.
- Ability to influence at executive level, translating technical concepts into business-relevant outcomes and driving organisational change.
- Experience in developing leaders and managers, fostering a culture of engineering excellence and innovation across multiple teams.
