The opportunity
We are looking for a Capability Manager to support Leonardo UK’s world leading infrared detector and camera products. The Capability Manager role is responsible for developing product and technology roadmaps to ensure competitive future product family offerings to be sold in current and future markets.
You will be working with sales and marketing, engineering, customers, partners, suppliers and the wider business to identify gaps in capability then developing proposals to find solutions. Where needed you will champion the development of supporting business case needed to secure Leonardo internal investments. You will manage and review the investment funding to ensure efficient, timely product development through engineering delivery teams.
Leonardo operates a Custom Working environment, which provides considerable flexibility in how and where employees work. This role is based at Southampton where the detectors business is based and requires a level of travel to support the cameras business at Basildon. Occasional UK and international travel is also likely to be required.
What You’ll Do As a Capability Manager
- Gain a strong understanding of the market, customers, competitors, current and future trends and opportunities for both Infrared Detectors and Cameras.
- Consult broadly to develop product/technology roadmaps and their supporting investment strategies.
- Development of product business cases and supporting materials to support the roadmap on an annual basis as part of the Leonardo investment cycle.
- Chair reviews with the development teams to ensure delivery of the roadmap at an acceptable level of business risk whilst ensuring manufacturability and competitiveness
- To work with development teams to ensure IP is captured and protected with clear routes to exploitation.
- Presentations to customers, government agencies, and various business areas within Leonardo including VP and CTO.
- Support the business development activities and key campaigns to secure new business particularly when they align with the roadmaps and strategy.
- Work with other members of the Capability teams in the Detectors and wider teams to develop and share best practice for roadmap delivery.
What We Need From You
You really must have
- A strong degree in a scientific/engineering subject or equivalent level of experience.
- Experience of management of product and technology development along with the risk management strategies.
- Ability to develop and justify business cases for product or technology investments.
- A strong communicator at both technical and non-technical levels with a demonstrated ability to develop strong relationships with customers, partners and suppliers to mutual benefit.
- Ability to work in integrated project teams.
It would be nice if you had
- Experience of the defence industry and markets.
- Experience of imaging systems and sensors ideally infrared.
- A level of project management experience in a development environment.
