The role
As a Radiation Safety Officer, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. Joining a small team of professional health physicists, every day will be different keeping your workload varied. You will provide advice, guidance, and support training initiatives on radiation protection, radioactive waste management and transport of radioactive materials for HM Naval Base Clyde.
Day-to-day, you’ll be responsible for ensuring HMNB Clyde’s policies and procedures are up to date ensuring our compliance with the relevant statutory regulations and authorisation conditions. As a Radiation Safety Officer with us at Babcock International, your ongoing development to Radiological Protection Advisor (RPA) will be fully supported and an impressive portfolio achievable due to the varied workload you will undertake.
- You will assist in the management of Radiation Safety across HMNB Clyde including the implementation of the companies and our customers safety, quality and environmental policies ensuring that assessments of risks are carried out.
- Assist the Base Radiation Safety Officer in maximising the utilisation and the efficiency of all the section’s resource, ensuring that all tasks are carried out in accordance with our cost, time, and quality requirements.
- Ensure HMNB Clyde’s Safety management practices incorporate any new legislation, directives from Ministry of Defence and any other good practice that is shared across the Nuclear Industry.
- Act as Emergency Response Personnel to reported potential or actual nuclear incidents and/or events at HMNB Clyde, this will include partaking in an on-call rota.
This role is full time, 37 hours per week and provides hybrid working arrangements once you are fully competent within the role. As part of the role, you will be on call for 1 week out of every 3.
Essential experience of the Radiation Safety Officer
- Demonstratable experience as a health physicist with a working knowledge of radiological protection. Ideally you will also have experience of radioactive waste disposal and/or transport of radioactive materials substances environment.
- Ability to carry out an analysis of a wide range of problem-based issues, thinking laterally and pragmatically, identifying causal factors and related solutions.
- Previous participation in nuclear accident/emergency exercises would be an advantage.
Qualifications for the Radiation Safety Officer
- A Science or Nuclear Engineering degree.
Security Clearance
The successful candidate must be a sole UK national who is able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) and Naval Nuclear Propulsion Information (NNPPI) security clearance for this role.
