The role
As a Skynet RF & Modem Segment Technical Authority you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary.
Day-to-day, you will be providing technical leadership, independent technical oversight and subject matter expertise to the Skynet engineering teams to develop new, and support in-service, Satellite Communications systems and services for UK Defence customers.
- Serve as the subject matter expert and technical lead for all RF and modem-related systems within the satellite communications ground segment. Lead the design, development, and optimization of RF and modem systems, ensuring compatibility with satellite and network infrastructure. Liaise with government stakeholders, contractors, and vendors to ensure alignment of technical solutions with program goals and objectives.
- Provide technical oversight on the selection and integration of RF equipment, modems, and associated technologies, ensuring compliance with military standards and performance requirements. Collaborate with system architects, satellite payload engineers, and network operations teams to ensure seamless end-to-end system performance.
- Lead troubleshooting and resolution efforts for RF and modem-related issues in both development and operational phases.
- Develop and maintain technical documentation, including system requirements, specifications, test plans, and performance reports. Support system testing, validation, and fielding efforts, including participation in simulation, prototyping, and field exercises.
- Stay current with advances in RF and modem technologies and recommend upgrades or enhancements to maintain technological superiority.
This role is full time 37 hours per week and provides hybrid working arrangements with 2/3 days in the office and 2/3 days working from home.
Essential experience of the Skynet RF & Modem Segment Technical Authority:
- Experience with MILSATCOM, UHF, SHF, and EHF frequency bands.
- Familiarity with IP networking protocols, routing, and encryption as they relate to SATCOM systems.
- Previous experience working with UK MOD programs or other military satellite communications programs.
- Experience in system integration, testing, and validation of RF and modem systems
- Extensive experience in designing, deploying, and optimizing RF systems, modems, and ground segment components for satellite networks.
- Understanding of military satellite communication systems, including secure communication protocols encryption, and anti-jamming techniques.
- Proficiency with RF simulation tools, spectrum analysers, and link budget analysis software
Qualifications for the Skynet RF & Modem Segment Technical Authority:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, or a related field.
- Significant years of experience in RF engineering, modem technology, and satellite communications.

The successful candidate must be a UK National who is able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) security clearance for this role.
