Building on the success of the UK MoD Type 31 Frigate we have secured contracts for frigate export variants (AH140) with overseas customers. As well as supporting exports of frigates the engineering team is actively working on other ship newbuild and life extension programs around the world, from small fast attack craft all the way up to aircraft carriers.

You will join a national team of over 800 engineers and designers within the Marine Sector of Babcock. We are a leading design consultancy providing naval architecture, marine system engineering, electrical engineering, design modelling and project support services to the marine and defence markets. We have base offices in Bristol, Rosyth and Plymouth, and offer flexible working with office attendance and travel to meet project requirements.
The Role
As a Marine Structures Engineer, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. The marine structures design engineer is responsible for preparing, developing and substantiating Marine and Structural designs through calculations, simulations, commissioning and diagnostic test support. They are required to contribute to product development throughout the design lifecycle and provide technical support, ensuring efficient and effective delivery of engineering outputs.
Day-to-day, you’ll
- Liaise with, and provide support to, design teams and other stakeholders to ensure coordination and functionality of design, including supporting design reviews.
- Primary deliverables are substantiation reports/designs for installation solutions.
- Preparation and production of substantiation reports for solutions throughout the entire design lifecycle in line with recognised standards and to the required time, cost and quality requirements.
- Provide solutions to manufacturing and installation issues by assisting in the resolution of technical and production queries.
- Produce technical reports and other documentation.
This role is full time, 35 hours per week and provides hybrid working arrangements with 2-3 days in the office/onsite and 2-3 days working from home.
Essential experience of the Marine Structures Engineer
- Proven experience in structural/marine engineering.
- Experience within the defence is preferable but not essential.
- CAD and FEA experience would be an advantage.
Qualifications for the Marine Structures Engineer
- Ideally degree qualified but HND/HNC level qualification in an engineering discipline with extensive experience in relevant field will be considered.
- Ideally you will be a member of a relevant institution (e.g. RINA, IET, IMechE, IMarEst etc.) and hold, or be working towards, Chartered or Incorporated status.
- Either already UK Security cleared or able for achieve UK SC clearance
