The role
As a Group Safety, Health and Environmental Protection Director, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. Ensuring the continuous improvement of Babcock’s SH&EP performance across all Sectors, Direct Reporting Countries (DRCs) and Functions. The role exercises this responsibility through delivery of the Babcock SH&EP policy; leadership of the Corporate Safety Leadership Team; sponsorship and publication of Global Standards and maintains oversight of safety performance through monitoring and assurance.
Day-to-day, you’ll provide expert advice and direction to the Group CEO and Executive Committee on current and future (global) Safety, Health and Environmental protection legislation, guidance and practices to ensure the safety of our employees, business and communities in which Babcock operates, alongside continual improvement and promoting best practice.
- Lead SH&EP to ensure ownership and accountability for performance and safety of our people, while proactively engaging with the business to drive and influence a positive culture towards SH&EP by leading behavioural safety.
- Development, improvement and implementation of Babcock Group SH&EP policy that confirms the Babcock Group expectations. You will set and implement the Babcock SH&EP strategy and annual improvement plan.
- Report to the Babcock Board and provide regular updates in relation to global SH&EP performance and culture.
- Chair and advise the Executive Safety Committee (which includes all Sector’s and DRC CEOs) and Corporate Safety Leadership team to drive performance improvement, learnings and best practice.
- Lead organisational and operational SH&EP assurance of Sectors, DRCs, Functions and Business Units.
- Leadership and management of the SH&EP function, capability, and people, including assurance of their competency and development of this team across the business in line with current and future SH&EP practices, trends and requirements.
- Represent Babcock as a standing member of the Defence Industrial Safety Forum and other related external industry (and cross-industry) forums as required.
This role is full time, 37.5 hours per week and requires regular travel both nationally and internationally alongside home working arrangements.
Essential experience of the Group Safety, Health and Environmental Protection Director:
- Broad knowledge/ experience of safety, health and environmental governance, management frameworks and their application in a multi-national, multi-activity company with complex industrial environments under varied national legislation and high hazard regulators.
- Experience and evidence of working at a strategic level delivering high performance through inspiring leadership and collaboration. You will have a track record or achieving and building a “Best in Class” culture of safety, health and environmental protection.
- Credible and impressive Senior leader with gravitas who can build relationships and use specialist expertise to drive positive SH&EP outcomes
- Evidence of embedding behavioural change across multi-disciplinary leadership teams, globally in a matrixed organisation.
- Experience of holding senior leaders to account for their SH&EP performance from the Group CEO through to individual business unit levels.
- Creative and innovative approach to improving SH&EP performance and ability to drive cultural change.
