By working closely with the US government and coordinating grassroots advocacy efforts, our Corporate and Government Affairs team represents United on public policy and legislative issues. And our Environmental Affairs team is equally working hard to shape an environmentally sustainable future. Key Responsibilities
The Director - Government Affairs is responsible for overseeing, supervising, and advocating for the company in governmental affairs issues at the state and local level supporting the West Coast. The position would be based preferably in Los Angeles or San Francisco reporting to the Managing Director, State and Local Government Affairs. The role has primary responsibility for local and state government affairs in key regional markets, including California, Oregon, Washington, and Nevada and leads civic engagement strategy across the region.
This position assumes a leadership role in assigned markets with key external audiences (political, community/civic, business) to advance United’s corporate/business and legislative interests by promoting and maintaining diligent participation in aviation policy and building constructive and effective relationships with government, community, and business leaders.
- Driving and supporting success on major legislation and policy initiatives that support UA’s business agenda, including taxes, airport development, environmental, labor, security, passenger, and consumer issues
- Helping to draft legislative or report language when necessary; negotiating legislative language with partners; assisting in the development and implementation of legislative strategies and campaigns to advance United’s business and corporate interests.
- Monitoring hearings; monitoring the introduction and legislative process of pertinent bill
- Developing and maintaining effective relationships with lawmakers, key staff, airport leadership, and other partners; assisting in decision-making related to the PAC and in attending political events
- Effective leadership, issue, and project management including coordinating with other key internal departments (Communications, Legal, Corporate Real Estate, etc.) to help achieve company’s business goals, developing and implementing executive leadership visits with key partners
- Coordinating with and assisting the MD of State and Local Government Affairs
- Building relationships with all aviation partners to create opportunities for United to build coalitions for certain key aviation issues that require broad support
- Engaging with and providing mentorship to a team of well-respected, highly accomplished outside key consultants/lobbyists
- Development and promotion of internal and external strategies, policies and resources in hub markets that advance a positive image of UA as a responsible corporate citizen
- Help manage relationships with key business and civic organizations in the market
- Also provide support and engagement with key community (e.g., non-profit) partners
- Active participant in employee engagement and customer events

Qualifications
What’s needed to succeed (Minimum Qualifications):
- Bachelor's degree
- 12+ years of relevant experience
- Substantive expertise with more than 7 years in legislative, regulatory, and political process at the state and local level of government or related field
- Knowledge of legislative, regulatory, and political process at the state and local level of government
- Must be results oriented, confident self-starter who can work independently or in a team
- Outstanding writing and presentation skills
- Ability to clearly articulate goals and objectives and proven track record to influence/collaborate
- Maturity and ability to inspire change in a highly complex environment
- Ability to understand industry; share ideas and develop effective responses or elevate to higher management if appropriate
- Proven leadership capability
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship
- Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification
- Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position
- The position is fully remote and would preferably be based in the Los Angeles or San Francisco area
What will help you propel from the pack (Preferred Qualifications):
- Juris Doctor (JD), master’s degree in business administration, public administration, or equivalent experience
- Knowledge of aviation/airline industry
Salary
- The salary for this position is $144,000 - $212,000, dependent on job-related, non-discriminatory factors such as experience, education, and skills. This range is based on a full-time schedule.
