Instrumentation Engineer III (Power Generation / EPC)
Long-term contract in Birmingham, AL
Very competitive pay, time-and-a-half for OT, Mob/Demob, and strong per diem.
Join a fast-growing EPC firm (projected to double in size over the next 18 months) supporting power generation projects, including gas turbines, renewables, and battery energy storage systems (BESS). You’ll be part of a collaborative team delivering full construction packages for critical infrastructure supporting data centers and energy systems.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering (or related)
- 7+ years of instrumentation & controls experience in industrial or power environments
- Experience in EPC project environments strongly preferred
- Working knowledge of:
- PLCs, DCS architecture, SCADA, EMS/PMS systems
- Field instrumentation (pressure, flow, temperature, level, etc.)
- Proficiency with AutoCAD, Plant 3D, ElecDes, or similar design tools
- Strong understanding of NEC, IEEE, ISA, and related industry standards
- Experience mentoring or guiding junior engineers/designers
- PE license preferred or actively pursuing
Responsibilities:
- Develop detailed instrumentation design deliverables, including:
- Instrument location plans
- Interconnect diagrams
- Loop diagrams / loop sheets
- Instrument datasheets
- Cable schedules
- Material take-offs (MTOs)
- P&IDs
- Design and implement instrumentation systems for process control and monitoring
- Perform engineering calculations to validate design integrity
- Support development of complete, field-ready construction packages
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (mechanical, electrical, civil)
- Support field activities including startup and commissioning
- Interface with vendors and support equipment selection
- Participate in design reviews and safety reviews (HAZOPs)
- Identify and communicate scope changes and design updates
- Mentor and support the development of junior engineers and designers, providing technical guidance and fostering best practices
- Contribute to efficient project execution across multiple schedules
Technical Skills & Knowledge
• Knowledgeable in electrical design software (e.g., AutoCAD, Plant 3D, and ElecDes)
• Proficiency in PLCs, DCS System Architecture and optimization, OT, SCADA systems,
EMS/PMS and field instrumentation, including industry approved protocols.
• Strong understanding of NEC, IEEE, ISA, and other relevant codes and standards.
• Ability to produce efficient, constructible designs with attention to cost and schedule.
• Experience with EPC project workflows and documentation standards.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, & Outlook)
