Job Summary
We are seeking a Facilities Maintenance Technician to support the maintenance, repair, and ongoing operation of building systems, equipment, and infrastructure. This role will assist with preventative maintenance, general repairs, contractor coordination, and facility projects ranging from routine maintenance to minor tenant improvement projects.
Under the supervision of the Facilities Chief Engineer and/or Lead Maintenance Technician, this position will help maintain the building’s interior and exterior, including mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, boiler, DI water, vacuum, and compressed air systems. The role will also support general maintenance needs such as painting, drywall, carpentry, lighting, equipment moves, and furniture installation.
This position serves as a point of contact for outside maintenance contractors and helps ensure work is completed safely, accurately, and on schedule.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with the operation, maintenance, and repair of central plant systems, including chillers, exhaust fans, air handlers, pumps, steam systems, controls, and related equipment
- Respond to work order requests in a timely and efficient manner
- Support maintenance tasks that require coordination with contractors, vendors, parts, tools, and internal departments
- Partner with Operations, EH&S, and administrative teams to plan and schedule facility projects
- Identify maintenance issues or potential concerns and work with the Facilities Chief Engineer to determine next steps
- Assist with writing, maintaining, and implementing facilities policies and procedures
- Research and recommend system improvements to increase efficiency and reduce costs
- Support preventative maintenance, service, and repair of laboratory and facility equipment, including CO2 manifold delivery systems, liquid nitrogen handling, air compressors, DI water systems, vacuum systems, environmental rooms, BSCs, pumps, ice machines, centrifuges, refrigerators, freezers, and other research-related equipment
- Oversee contracted maintenance activities as needed
- Conduct daily and monthly inspections and testing of DI water systems, emergency generators, safety equipment, HVAC units, and related systems
- Perform routine building repairs and maintenance, including floors, walls, ceilings, doors, drains, restrooms, lunchrooms, laboratories, electrical, plumbing, lighting, and parking lot areas
- Assist with tenant improvement projects, including scope definition, contractor coordination, and project oversight
- Maintain accurate logs, records, and service manuals
- Respond to equipment and building alarms during business hours and after hours as needed
- Support furniture purchases, space coordination, scheduling, installation, and equipment moves
- Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned
Qualifications
- Minimum 3–5 years of experience in maintenance, facilities, mechanical service, or a related field
- High school diploma or GED required
- Working knowledge of diagnostic equipment, carpentry, common hand tools, and general maintenance practices
- General computer skills, including Gmail, Google applications, Microsoft Word, and Excel
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively with internal teams and external contractors
- Valid California driver’s license and reliable transportation required
- Ability to participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation and arrive onsite within one hour of notification
- Ability to work overtime and adjust schedule based on workload
- Must successfully complete background investigation and post-offer physical
- Must be willing to sign an employee confidentiality agreement
- Regular, reliable, and on-time attendance required
