About the team you are joining
The Senior Legal Counsel (SLC)- Advocacy and Industry Regulation
(AIR) is a senior legal professional with significant, knowledge, skills,
experience and expertise in relation to airline industry regulatory matters,
international aviation law and is responsible for providing advice,
support, and research on diverse subject areas to support IATA’s advocacy,
government affairs and industry legal activities, both internally and
externally. The SLC – AIR reports to the Assistant Director, Associate General
Counsel (AGC) Advocacy and Industry Regulation (AIR).
This role has a specific portfolio focus on regulated infrastructure for
the AIR stream, including airport slots and regulated charges for airports and
related infrastructure facilities.
What your day would be like
- Provides
independent advice on substantive and procedural questions of considerable
complexity, which may include those related to international air law,
administrative law, litigation, dispute resolution, economic and technical
regulations and policy relevant to the airline industry and related
questions of administration and management.
- Manages substantive
litigation, including administrative and judicial appeals, relating to
regulatory decisions on the appropriate level of regulated charges at
airports and infrastructure facilities.
- Advises on legal
questions arising in respect of airport slots, the Worldwide Airport Slot
Guidelines (WASG) and relevant national legislation.
- Responds to
requests for legal assistance from clients and work assignments referred
by AGC. DGC (Deputy General Counsel) or GC (General Counsel).
- Prepares and
provides to IATA’s business groups independent legal
opinions, memoranda and information papers on questions concerning
the interpretation or application of law, legal instruments, or legal
principles in relation to IATA’s activities across multiple jurisdictions.
- Drafts appropriate
responses to correspondence and communication raising legal issues or
having legal implications.
- Peer reviews work
of other team members.
- Participates in
legal team practice groups.
- Mentors junior
members of the team;
- Collaborates with
other LSCS team members.
- Drafts material on
legal subjects for dissemination to airline legal members including case
reviews, summaries of legal developments.
- Delivers
presentations to airline members and other external in various IATA
governance council meetings, taskforces and working groups.
- Manages, instructs,
and approves the budget for external counsel in accordance with LSCS team
processes.
- Monitors and
reviews performance of external counsel.
- Collaborates with
other LSCS team members across the work of LSCS and with IATA staff,
external counsel and airline members.
- Communicates
directly with IATA staff, external counsel, and airline members.
- Maintains strong
relationships with specialist legal communities relevant to IATA’s work.
We would love to hear from you if
- Advanced University
degree in law, (LLB, JD, LLM) from an internationally recognized
university,
- Admission to
practice law in a relevant jurisdiction, preferably the UK, EU member
state, Canada, US, Australia or New Zealand.
- Seven years post
legal qualification experience in increasingly responsible positions in an
organization, government department or law firm.
- Experience in
matters of public law, economic regulation and regulated charges. Direct
experience in advising on airport or infrastructure charges and airport
slot matters is highly regarded, whether for a government, airline,
airport or private clients in private practice.
- Experience managing
administrative or judicial appeals.
