Within the CSG, the Human Exploration and Space Flight (HESF) Division supports our NASA customer in all aspects of human space flight. We are looking for an Artificial Intelligence (AI)/Machine Learning (ML) Engineer (
Project Engineer/Sr. Project Engineer –Technical Project Management). In this role you will support the NASA Johnson Space Center Engineering Aeroscience and Flight Mechanics Division (AFMD) as a Guidance, Navigation & Control (GNC) AI/ML expert supporting human exploration programs. The AFMD provides technical leadership in the engineering disciplines of aerodynamics and aerothermodynamics; guidance, navigation, and control flight performance; mission design; and autonomous systems. The division provides engineering design, development, testing, and evaluation for all phases of space flight (ascent, entry, orbit, and interplanetary) and for all types of human spacecraft.
Work Model
This is a full-time position based at NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC) in Houston, TX, offering a hybrid work model that combines 3-4 regular onsite workdays and remote flexibility as the business and customer needs allow.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Collaborate across the assigned NASA Programs to establish and execute the strategy for the Program’s AI research and development (key products include vision, direction, investment strategy and associated roadmaps)
- Partner across the NASA Programs to align AI/ML efforts with overall strategy and operational goals
- Lead coordinated engagements on AI across all the associated NASA stakeholders and ensure consistent messaging across all communication channels
- Build an implementation plan for AI/ML technologies, offering innovative approached from Aerospace and operate within Aerospace’s AI ecosystem.
- Establish a professional services team to support the AI/ML initiatives across the NASA Programs
- Lead the establishment and maintenance of a robust AI governance framework and infrastructure
- Stay informed about and contribute to the advancement of AI technologies by monitoring emerging industry trends, academic research, and technological breakthroughs
- Serve as a highly proactive technical specialist while working closely across various engineering disciplines, flight operations, crew office, commercial providers and program teams, working groups and panels to ensure visiting vehicle success
- Lead forums and venues to formulate and prepare technical findings and recommendations
- Coordinate and evaluate technical objectives, requirements, interfaces, standards, issues
- Perform other duties for the customer as required
What You Need To Be Successful
Minimum Requirements for the Project Engineer- Technical Project Management:
- Bachelor’s degree in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Computer Science, or a related technical field
- 5 or more years of experience leading, researching, defining and implementing Data Science, AI or related strategies
- Demonstrated deep understanding of cutting-edge AI/ML technologies, including but not limited to generative models (e.g., GPT, GANs), reinforcement learning (e.g., AlphaGo, DQN), transformer architectures, and the practical application of these models in real-world scenarios such as natural language processing, computer vision, or autonomous systems.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to coordinate cross-functional teams and engage with external stakeholders
- Strategic thinking and problem-solving abilities with a focus on innovation and operational excellence
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance, issued by the DOD. US citizenship is required to obtain a clearance Bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field
- Willing to travel occasionally to work location/domestically/internationally approx. 4-6 times a year
In addition to the above, the minimum requirements for the Senior Project Engineer-Technical Project Management include:
- At least 10+ years’ experience leading, researching, defining and implementing Data Science, AI or related strategies
- Experience leading AI/ML initiatives, including research, development, governance or large-scale deployment of capabilities
- Exceptional leadership and team management skills, with a track record of building and empowering high-performing teams
