Component Design Engineer

An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Design Engineer to join our Transmissions, Structures & Externals team within Rolls-Royce Defence Mature Programmes team in Bristol.
Working in the Defence Mature Programmes Organisation of a global Defence aero engine manufacturer, we are looking to welcome a talented engineer into an established team, whose role is responsible for the creation of a component design definition that meets the given requirements and product attributes. They shall create robust solutions for system- to feature-level issues, taking account the appropriate functional, fleet-management and manufacturability requirements.
The Design Engineer shall exhibit strong technical knowledge in mechanical design methodologies and have an understanding of cross-discipline engineering concepts and activities which include but are not limited to Manufacturing (including component validation activities), In-Service Management and Product Definition (including component tolerances). The Design Engineer shall have the ability to integrate with the supply chain to ensure the effective resolution of complex and time-bound component design and manufacturability related issues.
You will work closely with talented professionals from across the full engineering spectrum including those from other Rolls-Royce sites, as well as with external suppliers.

What you will be doing:
In this exciting role you will have a chance to:
- Develop and optimize design solutions for mature in-service gas turbine engine components, focussing on reliability, performance improvement and life extension
- Perform failure investigations and root cause analyses for in-service engine components, implementing design changes to address recurring issues
- Prepare and maintain design reports and technical documentation, ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements
- Coordinate with multi-disciplinary teams, including manufacturing, materials and operations support to implement design updates and resolve operational challenges
- Assess quality notifications on Original Equipment Manufacture (OEM), Assembly, Maintenance Repair and Overhaul (MRO), with opportunities to develop close working relationships with Rolls-Royce supply chain both internally and externally, including casting houses and machinists, to complex fabricators, and the Rolls-Royce build line and MRO facilities. Provide innovative solutions and proactive support to prevent problems and ensure smooth and efficient operations.

- Bachelor's degree or Master's in Engineering or regional equivalent qualification, or equivalent experience
- Strong technical knowledge in mechanical design methodologies and have an understanding of cross-discipline engineering concepts which include but are not limited to manufacturing engineering, aerodynamics, thermodynamics, thermal and mechanical analysis, cost engineering and product definition.
- Experience of Robust Design, Design for Manufacture (DfM), Systems Engineering philosophies and practical application would be advantageous.
- An ability to apply logical, analytical and innovative thinking on a range of technical problems and make balanced decisions across technical and business parameters
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills that will allow you to integrate with people throughout the organisation, at all levels, to ensure the effective resolution of design issues.
