Key Responsibilities
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Scrum Master Lead to join our team. This person will be responsible for engaging with development teams, fellow scrum masters, and business analysts/product owners to facilitate project delivery, system maintenance, and production support. They will be instrumental in conducting scrum ceremonies, fostering multi-functional team collaboration, and mentoring junior scrum masters. A key focus will be to nurture our culture of collaboration, innovative problem-solving, and professional excellence—hallmarks of our high-performing teams. The role involves reinforcing communication among various sub-teams within the EMD team and demonstrating insights into interpersonal dynamics to optimize team collaboration and efficiency. The ideal candidate will exemplify leadership and integrate effectively into our culture of accountability and psychological safety. Close partnership with EMD leadership is essential to align and drive the team’s success.
The Electronic Miscellaneous Document (EMD) team at United Airlines is a 30-person division responsible for a complex system at the heart of the Commercial IT department. EMDs serve as the source of truth for the carriage and service contracts of United Airlines' passengers, and as a result, are integral to the airline's daily operations. Our 40+ applications directly support United's ability to identify, track, and process revenue-related transactions, and are a backend input to all our customer- and agent-facing systems such as DotCom, Mobile, Navigator, Jet, and many more.
The EMD team works closely with numerous other teams within United Airlines, contributing to the company's commitment to excellence. The work that EMD successfully delivers is highly intricate due to the nature of the industry, requiring a deep understanding of various elements such as EMDs, electronic tickets (etickets), Passenger Name Records (PNRs), forms of payment, and the wide array of products and services offered by the airline. This role requires the ability to make direct connections between business processes and system architectures, as well as anticipating impacts beyond EMD’s domain.
- Facilitate the Scrum ceremonies, ensuring team members have the resources and support needed to effectively and efficiently deliver high business value
- Support backlog clarity and transparency, both in requirements and in priority
- Aid requirements gathering by asking probing questions & uncovering dependencies and sequencing needs
- Coordinate with others to ensure smooth handovers and knowledge support
- Pursue rapid resolution of cross-team dependencies
- Communicate clearly about project and technical dependencies, timelines, and progress
- Demonstrate and support colleagues in Agile oriented behaviors & practices
- Continuously seek improvement opportunities to boost the team's effectiveness, psychological safety, ability to self-organize
- Developing strategies for employee training & growth.
- Representing the development team in cross-team meetings
- Foster a culture of collaboration, personal and team excellence, and articulate, concise dialogue.
- Aiding in the user documentation and knowledge transfer on the team
- Establish, manage, and continually refine impactful processes that help the team achieve their goals.
- Advocate for your team, ensuring they have the necessary resources and support to deliver high-quality products.
- Maintain a prioritized product backlog that aligns with the team's objectives.
- Publish a roadmap and provide regular updates for collaborators.
- Coordinate multi-functional efforts as necessary, aligning all team members on success metrics.
- Continually improve the team's efficiency, productivity, and effectiveness by identifying and implementing process improvements.

Qualifications
What’s needed to succeed (Minimum Qualifications):
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Communication, English, Business, or related field
- 4+ years of relevant experience in a Scrum Master or Project Manager role
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Must be able to collaborate with various teams
- Must encourage and support team empowerment and a sense of shared ownership
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship
- Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification
- Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position
- Solid understanding of Scrum tools and techniques
- Exposure to other Agile frameworks (e.g., kanban, XP) and scaling frameworks (e.g., LeSS, Nexus)
- Experience in working with large multi-functional teams
What will help you propel from the pack (Preferred Qualifications):
- Master's degree
- PSM, SAFe or other Agile Certifications
- Ability to lead by example, demonstrating strong servant leadership and a focus on team empowerment
- Experience working in a collaborative, multi-functional Agile environment, with a solid focus on delivering value
- Ability to manage and resolve conflict effectively, keeping the team focused on achieving sprint goals
- Familiarity with agile principles and means of achieving outcomes, and ability to work with other teams
- Airline Industry technologies and concepts like EMD, PNR, ETKTs
- Familiarity with payment processing within the Airlines Industry
- Experience self-regulating workload in a fast-paced environment.

The base pay range for this role is $109,820.00 to $149,600.00.
The base salary range/hourly rate listed is dependent on job-related, non-discriminatory factors such as experience, education, and skills. This position is also eligible for bonus and/or long-term incentive compensation awards.
