The
Senior Medical Officer – Aviation Occupational Health sits within Safety, Health & Security Services and reports to the Head of Group Medical Services. This role provides specialist medical leadership in the delivery of Occupational Health and Aviation Medicine services in line with the Qantas Group Safety Strategy and agreed service level agreements. The position focuses on enhancing the health, safety and wellbeing of both customers and employees through the delivery of comprehensive medical and health services across biological, physical and mental health domains, working in close partnership with internal and external stakeholders.
The role plays a key leadership position in shaping and managing Qantas Group occupational health services for employees. This includes strategic oversight of health and wellbeing initiatives, mental health programs, pre employment medical assessments, injury management and occupational rehabilitation, alcohol and other drug programs in an aviation context, management of occupational exposures, and employee health surveillance in accordance with regulatory requirements.
As part of the medical leadership team, the role also supports the delivery of aviation medicine services by ensuring aircrew fitness for work in compliance with WHS requirements and CASA regulations (CASR Part 67 and Part 99). In addition, the position contributes to the passenger health program, promoting inflight customer safety and reducing the risk and impact of medical emergencies. The role provides direct medical expertise, including on call medical support and operational advice, ensuring business as usual service delivery aligns with agreed service levels and operational priorities.
What You’ll Bring
- A medical degree with current registration in good standing
- Postgraduate qualifications in Occupational Medicine (FAFOEM or equivalent, or advanced training towards fellowship)
- Designation as a CASA Aviation Medical Examiner (DAME) or eligibility to obtain
- Medical Review Officer (MRO) certification or eligibility to obtain
- Minimum 5 years post qualification experience, including at least 2 years in occupational medicine within a complex organisation
- Demonstrated experience leading enterprise scale occupational health and aviation medicine programs
- Strong knowledge of aviation regulatory frameworks and safety critical environments
- Proven ability to influence senior stakeholders and operate autonomously in high consequence settings
- Strong clinical judgement, data literacy and evidence based decision making capability
- A collaborative, pragmatic leadership style with a continuous improvement mindset
