Manufacturing Engineer – Measurement Specialist lead

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Manufacturing Engineer – Measurement Lead / Specialist to join the Rolls-Royce Manufacturing Engineering Team in the newly formed Finished machining Category within the Procurement organisation.
In this role, you will be Initially working within the aerofoils commodity with Existing and New Entrant suppliers to develop their Measurement Systems and capability. You will be working with the MECL and Project IPT as parts of a major transfer program.
The main objectives of the role will be to develop the supplier’s capability by establishing the optimum process and method in line with commodity standards. Working with the supplier to develop their knowledge of the Measurement processes. Developing Aerofoil commodity Inspection standards Advising / Consulting on developing the standards within the supply chain. Supporting the supplier through the development, validation and rate proving process (APQP/FAIR / PPAP).

What you will be doing:
You will execute engineering activities to deliver capability to meet business and customer requirements for safety, quality, cost, deliver rate and lead time (SQCD). After this initial phase of supporting the Aerofoil transfer program it is then envisaged that the individual will take a wider responsibility for the whole Finish machining category / commodities. In the wider role the responsibilities will be to ensure the Rolls-Royce policies and standards for measurement and calibration are implemented across the Category, you will also:
- Develop and monitor the measurement capability within the business to ensure the engineering requirements are satisfied for new product introduction, part transfer and on-going manufacture.
- Drive to zero defects. Work with all functions to reduce risks and drive product and service right first time. Ensure compliance to all relevant company legislative and technical policies and standards.
- Implement the Metrology Operating Model within the Machining Procurement Category.
- Act as the technical authority for metrology in machining, ensuring these activities align to corporate policy.
- Develop the commodity inspection standards across the supply chain.
- Ensure best practices for measurement are implemented in the business and approve any new measurement capability e.g select, develop, implement and ensure compliance with the Corporate, National or International standards and policies on measurement.
- Develop mechanisms to ensure measurement data can be seamlessly accessed by those that need it elsewhere in the organisation (e.g. Design Engineering etc).
- Take an active role in reviewing the measurement methods and controls, approving procedures for both domestically manufactured parts and for parts manufactured in the external supply network.
- Ensure that suitable skills and knowledge in metrology are in place across the business.
- Pro-actively assess internal and external networks of fellow specialists to further the understanding of metrology and take an active part in the Metrology CoP meetings.
- Work with the Aerospace Procurement Business Metrologist /Manufacturing Engineering Manager / MECL responsible for the supply chain to ensure that the supply chain has effective, capable and traceable measurement systems in place.

- Professionally qualified engineer (Chartered Engineer) preferably with a degree in an engineering discipline.
- Previous experience in measurement activities with a deep understanding of the subject.
- Knowledge and understanding of manufacturing, assembly and NDE processes.
- A high level of computer literacy. Project Management skills.
- Enthusiastic approach to Metrology with a passion to embrace new technologies.
- Ability to work alone and the drive to succeed. It is essential that you can create simple solutions to complex problems and present the solution to both shop-floor and director level for approval.
- Measurement, calibration and traceability (Metrology) underpins the Rolls-Royce reputation for Quality and therefore you will be expected to have a strong technical engineering background, broad experience of manufacturing and an understanding of the global controls for calibration and traceability.
