PURPOSE OF JOB
To act as the Lead Engineer for Industrialisation in providing effective Industrial support to a particular project. This will encompass:-
- Process development
- Industrialisation development through APQP to encompass:
- Manufacturability and DFMA.
- Design the Process workflow.
- Achieve Cost targets (NRC and RC).
- Definition of the manufacturing processes
- Support development of Test strategy.
- PFMEA
- Training of operations team on key processes
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Acting as the technical authority, provides effective Industrial support to major projects from bid preparation to APQP deployment through to Manufacturing Readiness Level (MRL) assessment, completion of the Production Readiness Review (PRR) and commencement of serial production, detailing the IPE, tools, facilities, test strategy and resources necessary to ensure:-
- Cost effective manufacture and test which maximises key resource utilization.
- Best flow of materials, tools and parts to ensure minimum cycle and disruption times.
- Ensure design and quality standards are embedded within the process through innovative IPE, equipment, tooling and test strategies.
- Successful completion of Production Readiness Review and First Article, thus verifying product conformance, and achievement of both short term and long term capability through selection of appropriate tools to achieve process control.
- Achievement of project deliverables on schedule at budgeted cost.
- To assess customers’ requirements, detailed in Statements of Works, RFQ’s, etc. to ensure manufacturing goals and objectives are clear, accurate and complete. Prepare plans, including resource plans to ensure compliance.
- In conjunction with IPE Management develop an Industrial strategy and philosophy to be applied to the project including specifying Industrial work-packages.
- Identify constraints in terms of tooling, resource and engineering issues and implement and co-ordinate corrective action to support the project.
- Provide resource estimates and expertise (manufacturing plans, resource requirements, first Article plans, project impacts) for new business, development, and bid proposals and ensure this is monitored from bid.
- To provide IPE expertise during project design phase within a multi-functional team to ensure new products meets Design for Manufacture, Assembly and Test requirements, providing recommendations on alternative design options where appropriate in order to achieve target costs and agreed UPC.
- Responsible for the creation, development, implementation and maintenance of the “First Article Plan” for new product introduction.
- To liaise with suppliers and customers on Industrial related issues, specific to project work-package, and develop and implement solutions to meet customer expectations.
- Assist Supplier Management, by providing Industrial inputs to invitation to Tender Documents, developing scoring matrix for responses and providing recommendations of supplier selection to IPE Managers and Project Manager.
JOB CONTEXT AND CONTENT
- The jobholder is responsible for providing training to project personnel on process/project matters and to ensure that his/her own skills are consistent with the demands of the job.
- The jobholder is involved in all aspects of the assessment/approval of pre/post freeze design activities and manufacturing processes, both internal and external to ensure the efficient manufacture of conforming product in support of project deliverables.
- In support of new Industrial projects, the jobholder is responsible for the technical quality of the team particularly with regard to product manufacturability and test, and manufacturing cost.
- The jobholder is responsible for the timely scheduling of engineering, facilities, tooling and related activities within the project, thus ensuring project milestones are achieved.
KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND BEHAVIOURS
Qualifications:
- The jobholder will be educated to degree level or equivalent in a relative engineering / manufacturing engineering discipline or with a Material & Processes background.
Experience:
- Typically the jobholder’s experience will have been in a Senior Manufacturing Engineering role
Knowledge and Experience:
- Development of Test Strategies
- Understanding of Industry Standards ECSS, MIL etc
- Understanding of process qualification
- Understanding of REACH, COSHH, Health and Safety
- APQP & NPI
- Product life cycle phases i.e., feasibility, development/design, manufacture and customer support
- Estimating techniques and support to bids and CAPEX
- Industrial engineering including process / material flow and factory layout
- Awareness of Machine shop processes, mechanical / electrical assembly processes / Treatments
- Non-destructive testing techniques
- Process controls
- Design for Manufacture, Assembly and Test
- Problem Solving techniques
The job holder shall have a comprehensive knowledge of manufacturing and/or test processes and may specialise in a specific Manufacturing technology of importance to the company.
